Low Cost Flyback Transformer Driver Circuit (Build Low cost High Voltage Spark Generator)

Dear Friends,

Are you searching for High Voltage projects?
Have you not succeeded to make a "Flyback Transformer" circuit?

Here, in this blog I am going to explain you all how to make a low-cost driver circuit for a flyback transformer or A TV transformer.

What is a Flyback transformer?

Flyback transformers also called as LOTs (Line Output Transformers) can be seen in old CRT monitors and TVs and these yield output voltages upto around 18000 - 30000volts. These are used in generate high voltage (HV) wherein you want HV arcs. It can be used to experiment for demonstration of High Voltage also. For example, if you are interested in making a mini Tesla coil, Jacob's ladder, Plasma Speaker, Plasma globe etc.

I myself tried many of the driver circuits for TV transformer but many of them failed and did not get expected results. Finally, when I tried this below mentioned circuit, I got the required output. i.e. A HV arc. Friends……….. it feels really great to see the spark- the real beauty of electromagnetism. Hence we have included this in our blog which is meant for electrical technology.

Let’s get into the topic. People who opt for a low-cost circuit can try out this one.

You can buy flyback transformer from nearest Electrical hardware shop or TV/Radio service shop. Also, it is available on Online shopping sites like ebay, Alibaba etc. it costs around 300 Rupees (around 5$).

When we see transformer at first time we will get confuse for terminals and connections. There are no Input terminals available here. We should make our own coil around Primary core. There are many Output terminals available since secondary coil has many Tap.

Main Circuit:

There are required 2 windings on Primary side where “Feedback Coil” will act as choke to create oscillation and makes transistor ON/OFF continuously. Feedback coil has lesser number of turns than primary turns (around 2 to 3Nos). “Primary Coil” which is the main coil carries the main primary current and it has 4 to 6 Nos of turns. Here I used Normal Single strand insulated wire as Coil.

Once Coil is made, other connection shall be made as per Main Circuit diagram. Here Transistor works as Switch and because of ON/OFF action, AC Supply is created in Primary Coil. The reference voltage of Feedback coil is taken from Potential divider using 2 series resistor.

Circuit Diagram:

Note: the Value of current may required upto 5A in primary side, so the Power Source (+12 V) should have capacity of 5A. This currents flows and creates heat in transistor. Hence transistor should mount on Heat sink.

Required Components:
Flyback Transformer – 1Nos
Transistor 2N3055 – 1Nos
Resistor R1: 240ohm (1Watt) – 1Nos
Resistor R2: 33ohm (1 Watt) – 1Nos
Power Supply 12V, 5A – 1Nos.
Wires : As required

Keep the “Output Terminal 1” to near of each secondary Taping and check out the maximum spark.
So we have done a driver circuit. Check out the gap, colour of the spark. Enjoy………..and at the same time, be careful as you are playing with High voltage.
